STABILITY / TREATMENT:
This new and truly exciting type of Opal is fairly stable and it has NOT been treated with Opticon or any other surface sealing or stabilizing agent. Regardless of this fact, any and all natural solid opals require a long term storage treatment. We strongly suggest wrapping each opal in a soft, non abrasive cloth or cotton, sprinkle wet with a water/alcohol solution (around 20 percent of alcohol and 80 percent purified water – to prevent spoiling or molding over time). Check every few months, if the cloth or cotton becomes too dry simply add more moisture. Leaving even most stable natural solid opals without any protection may cause some undesired changes in color or will cause some internal cracks/crazing.
There is no such thing as a perfectly stable opal regardless of what other dealers may tell you
. It is in nature of each opal (crystal opals, fire opals require maximum care) to have a varying amount of water closed within the crystal. This water will slowly evaporate from the time each gem has been removed from the ground. If you don’t replenish this water loss you risk some level of damage to your newly purchased opal. Only Opticon treated opals, doublets or triplets (all man made by using some minimum amount of real opal) are more or less stable and do not require any extra care.
Never leave any opal stored directly in water (many sellers do this marketing scheme during gem shows). First of all, opal soaked in water look lively and most cracks and fractures are not visible. When you remove any solid opal from water it will lose water from within the crystal very quickly and this will cause some irreversible damage to the gemstone. You will enjoy your new solid Opal over your lifetime if properly taken care of.
