Description
1970 Plymouth 'Cuda Convertible
The new 1970 Plymouth Barracuda was introduced along with the all-new Dodge Challenger. Both shared the new E platform, a new platform for 1970 which kept with the pony car mantra...long nose, short deck. An extremely similar look shared by the cars fittingly resulted in them being known as the Mopar Twins.
For consignment one of the twins, but this one has been the recipient of a rotisserie restoration, which has been well documented. At this time this car received new fenders, new quarter panels, new front and rear valance panels, and a new convertible top. Bathed in two tone paint, and now with a 440ci engine let's just say rock and roll and hold on to the Jesus bar!
Exterior
At the front of the car, a traditional satin split grille with single matte silver bezel headlights flanking on either side. At the top of those lamps, the original bulge hood, now presenting in satin black with hood pins. The hood continues rearward to a pristine stainless framed windshield. Bringing up either side of the stainless are chromed sport mirrors. Moving to the rear quarter on our way we note extremely well minded gaps, all straight worry-free steel, and the familiar hockey stick 440 sticker in white. This all plays out on a field of deep burgundy paint, which also covers the quarter sides and doors. And at the back of the car, a traditional satin black valence housing the iconic Plymouth 3 bar taillights and a 'Cuda badge. The rear showroom quality bumper hangs below the valance, and in a burgundy rear panel dual chrome tipped exhaust peek out. Topping the car off is a nearly new canvas power activated convertible top with a clear rear window. On all 4 corners are chromed 15-inch Mopar Rally Wheels wrapped in 235/60R15's in front and larger 275/60R15's in back. Lest I forget the high flying black satin painted Go Wing on the trunk lid.
Interior
Keeping the door open to the "no stone left unturned department", we can swing open a door and see showroom quality door panels in white vinyl. Also showroom quality are 2 vinyl high back buckets with smooth center panels and back top and seat panels of tuck and roll pattern. These sport a clean contemporary styling and are shapely but still simple. The rear bench carries this motif in back, and these are nearly perfect as well. This all sits in a beautiful calm sea of jet black carpet. Floating above the carpet up front is a well done restoration on the dash, featuring a whistle round lineup of gauges, within a satin black field and a black padded dash top. Seen racing up the center between the buckets is a 70's stylized console in black vinyl, and wood appliqu, and sporting a wood 'Cuda pistol grip knob topping the automatic slap stick shifter. 2 white faced aftermarket gauges are hanging below the dash just to the left of the shifter. A wood rimmed wheel with a "Michelin Man' styled steering column fronts this dash.
Drivetrain
A 440ci V8 is now in and it has QuickFuel 4-barrel carburetor sitting atop. Attached to the back of this healthy mill is a 3-speed Torqueflite A727 automatic transmission. Power flows rearward and is distributed to each rear wheel via a 8-3/4 rear axle.
Undercarriage
With a restoration of this quality and attention to detail as such, one would expect nothing less than to see the likes of which are all rust free, even dirt free, perfection amalgamation of pure metal parts all with a burgundy field of the unibody. 11" rear drums, and front disc brakes, all held together with independent front, and leaf sprung rear suspension. Note the photo of the headers and engine pan, it might as well be jewelry, that is just how nice this car presents itself. And don't forget the Flowmaster clean and green exhaust.
Drive-Ability
Our decoder and Muscle car aficionado did this test drive and he returned with a smile on his face which speaks volumes, because he is always in a bad mood! He LOVED this car with its unending power curve, smooth shifting and nice handling. Bias free braking was apparent to him as the ability to spin the rear tires, which is always a plus with these early Muscle cars, prior to the EPA stepping in and messing things up. All was in working condition as to accessories etc.
All dressed up, and now also ready for some whoopass, 440 cubes, plenty of carb CFM, and a 3-speed, all wrapped up in straight pristine burgundy and satin black steel. Now that's what I call a muscle car. Bad enough to move away from the twin and become the evil stepsister! Lovely.
